Make an Avery address label template in your browser

An address label template is a grid of small labels tiled onto a full sheet of paper. You print the sheet, peel the labels off, and stick them on envelopes, packages, or your return mail. The catch is that the grid has to line up exactly with the pre-cut labels on your Avery sheet, or every label prints half off its cell and the whole sheet is wasted.

This free maker builds that grid for you. Pick your Avery product number, type one address or paste a whole mailing list, and download a print-ready PDF, PNG, or SVG. It runs entirely in your browser, so your addresses never leave your device, and there is no signup and no watermark.

How to make address labels

  1. Pick your Avery template. Look at the product number printed on your label sheet or its packaging (for example 5160 or 5167) and choose it from the list. The preview instantly shows the correct number of labels in the right grid.
  2. Choose a fill mode. Use same-label mode to put one address on every label (great for return-address stickers), or mail-merge mode to print a different address on each label.
  3. Add your content. Type the name, street, city, state, and zip, or paste a list of recipients. You can also import a CSV.
  4. Style it. Pick a layout, font, colors, and alignment, add a logo, and scale the text size.
  5. Download and print. Download the PDF and print it at 100% scale with fit-to-page turned off.

Which Avery number should I use?

The right template depends on how big your labels are and how many you need per sheet. These are the most common address label sizes on US Letter paper.

Avery numberLabel sizeGridPer sheetBest for
51602.625 x 1 in3 x 1030Standard address labels
51614 x 1 in2 x 1020Wide address labels
51624 x 1.333 in2 x 714Large address labels
51634 x 2 in2 x 510Shipping labels
51644 x 3.333 in2 x 36Large shipping labels
51671.75 x 0.5 in4 x 2080Return address labels
51951.75 x 0.667 in4 x 1560Return address labels

On A4 paper, the Avery L-series covers the same jobs: L7160 prints 21 labels in a 3 by 7 grid, L7161 prints 18, L7163 prints 14, and L7165 prints 8. If your label stock is not an Avery size, use the Custom option to set your own rows, columns, label size, margin, and gutter.

The default and most popular choice is Avery 5160, which prints 30 address labels per sheet in a 3 by 10 grid. For small return-address stickers, Avery 5167 prints 80 labels per sheet.

Same label vs mail merge

Same-label mode copies one address into all of the cells on the sheet. This is the return-address use case: your own name and address on every one of the 80 labels of an Avery 5167 sheet, ready to peel and stick on outgoing mail.

Mail-merge mode is for sending to many people. Each label gets a different address, filled row by row across the sheet. Paste your list (separate each recipient with a blank line so multi-line addresses stay together) or import a CSV with name, street, city, state, and zip columns. If you have more recipients than fit on one sheet, extra pages are added automatically, and each page prints on its own Avery sheet.

How to print so the labels line up

Alignment is the whole game with label sheets. Follow these steps every time.

  • Download the PDF, not a screenshot. The PDF page is generated at the exact physical size (8.5 by 11 inches for Letter, or 210 by 297 mm for A4).
  • In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% and turn off fit to page or shrink to fit. Fit-to-page silently resizes the sheet and throws every label off by a few millimeters.
  • Print one test page on plain paper first. Hold it up to the light against a blank Avery sheet to check the grid lines up with the die-cut labels.
  • Once it lines up, load the real label sheet and print.

Because there is no fit-to-page and no watermark, what you see in the preview is exactly what prints.

Address label template vs Word and Google Docs

You can build an address label template in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, but it is slower. In Word you open the Mailings tab, hunt for the matching Avery product number, and then wrestle with a locked table where the cells are the labels. In Google Docs you usually need a third-party add-on to get Avery sizing at all, and mail-merge means wiring up a Google Sheet.

This tool skips all of that. The Avery grid is built the moment you pick the product number, the mail merge is a paste or a CSV upload, and the output is a clean PDF that prints 1:1. There is nothing to install, no template file to download, and no account to create.

Tips for clean address labels

  • For return-address labels, use the compact return layout and the 5167 or 5195 template so the small labels do not look cramped.
  • Keep each address to four or five short lines. Very long lines are trimmed to fit the cell so they never overlap the next label.
  • Uploading a logo switches on the with-logo layout, which places a small mark to the left of the address. It costs $0 and makes business mail look finished.
  • Reusing a partial sheet? Set the start-on-label number so printing begins on the first unused cell instead of wasting the labels you already peeled.

Frequently asked questions

Which Avery address label templates are supported?

For US Letter: 5160 (30 per sheet), 5161 (20), 5162 (14), 5163 (10), 5164 (6), 5167 return address (80), and 5195 return address (60), plus their 8000-series equivalents. For A4: L7160 (21), L7161 (18), L7163 (14), and L7165 (8). There is also a Custom size option for non-Avery label stock. The most common address label is Avery 5160, which prints 30 labels in a 3 by 10 grid.

How do I print the labels at the correct size?

Download the PDF and print it at 100% scale with fit-to-page turned off. The page is generated at the exact physical size (8.5 by 11 inches for Letter or 210 by 297 mm for A4), so every label lands on its Avery cell. Run one test print on plain paper, hold it up to a blank label sheet to confirm alignment, then print on the real sheet.

What is the difference between same-label and mail-merge mode?

Same-label mode tiles one address into every cell on the sheet, which is what you want for return-address labels or a single business address. Mail-merge mode puts a different address in each cell, so you can print a whole mailing list at once. That mail-merge step is the feature most free design galleries hide behind a paid plan.

Can I import a list of addresses from a CSV or spreadsheet?

Yes. Switch to mail-merge mode and either paste your addresses (separate each recipient with a blank line) or upload a CSV with name, street, city, state, and zip columns. A downloadable sample CSV shows the exact format. Rows missing a required name value are reported as warnings rather than silently dropped.

Is this better than the address label template in Word or Google Docs?

It is faster for a print-ready sheet. In Microsoft Word or Google Docs you have to find the matching Avery template, fight the table cells, and manually mail-merge from a spreadsheet. Here you pick the Avery number, type or paste your addresses, and the exact grid is built for you with a live preview, then you download a PDF that prints 1:1 with no account and no watermark.

Can I add a logo, change fonts, or center the text?

Yes. Upload a logo for the with-logo layout, pick any font, set the name and text colors, choose left or centered alignment, and scale the font size up or down. There are four layout styles: plain, centered, with-logo, and a compact return-address style for the small 5167 and 5195 sheets.

Is the address label maker free and is there a watermark?

It is completely free with no signup and no watermark. Everything runs in your browser, your addresses never leave your device, and you can download as many print-ready PDF, PNG, or SVG sheets as you like.

I already peeled some labels off the sheet. Can I skip them?

Yes. Use the Start on label number control to leave the first labels blank so printing begins on the first unused cell. This lets you reuse a partial Avery sheet instead of wasting it.
