A business card QR code is a vCard

Under the hood, a business card QR code is a vCard: the standard format phones use to describe a saved contact. The code stores a small block of text that looks like this:

When a phone camera reads text that begins with BEGIN:VCARD, it recognises a contact rather than a web link, and it offers to save the details as a new contact. The code is not a link and it does not call any server: everything the phone needs to build the contact is inside the code itself. That is why it keeps working offline and never expires on its own.

You do not write any of that markup. You type your details into the fields, and the tool assembles the vCard for you, escaping any comma or semicolon in your name or company so the contact saves cleanly.

What to put on the code

Fill in the fields a contact record actually uses:

• Full name is the one field worth always including, because it becomes the display name of the saved contact.
• Job title and company give context so the person remembers who you are and where you work.
• Phone and email are the details people most often want to reach you by.
• Website points to your company site, portfolio or booking page.

Only the fields you fill in are written into the code. A minimal card with just a name, phone and email produces a small, fast-scanning code; a complete card carries everything. There is no need to fill in every field, and leaving one blank simply leaves that line out of the contact. As you type, the preview redraws so you can confirm the code is generating before you send the card to print.

Getting the code onto a printed card

A standard business card is roughly 85 by 55 mm, which is not a lot of room, so a few choices matter:

• Size the code around 2 to 2.5 cm square. Below about 2 cm a code becomes unreliable at reading distance. If the layout allows, a slightly larger code is more forgiving of a quick, off-angle scan.
• Give it a quiet margin. Leave a small band of blank space around the code. Scanners locate a code by its edges, and text or graphics pressed right up against it can stop a scan.
• Keep high contrast. A dark code on a light background is the most reliable. Reversed light-on-dark codes and codes laid over a photograph are the usual reasons a card fails to scan.
• Use the back or a corner. The back of the card, or a bottom corner of the front, keeps the code clear of your name and logo while staying easy to find.
• Print from the SVG. The SVG download is vector artwork and stays perfectly sharp at any size, so it is the right file for a professional print run. Use the PNG for a digital card, an email signature or a social profile.

Always scan your finished code with your own phone before ordering a batch. Confirm the contact saves with the right name, number and email. A thirty-second check saves a reprint.

A business card QR code is not only for paper. The same code works well:
