Turn a scan into a ready-to-send text message

An SMS QR code is the shortest path between a printed surface and a conversation. Someone points their phone at the code, the messaging app opens with your number already in the To field and a starter message already typed, and all they have to do is tap send. There is no number to copy down, no app to install and no form to fill in. For a store, a market stall, an event booth or a product insert, that removes almost every reason a customer would not get in touch.

This tool builds that code entirely in your browser. You type a phone number, optionally add a message, and the QR updates live. What an SMS QR code actually contains

A QR code is just a way of storing text as a pattern of squares. What makes a code an SMS code rather than a link is the exact text it stores. This tool writes the widely supported sms: format:

Three things are worth understanding in that string:

• sms: is the scheme. When a phone reads text that begins with sms:, it knows to open the messaging app rather than a browser, in the same way tel: triggers a call and mailto: opens email.
• +1234567890 is the recipient. Keep the country code so the number works for people scanning from anywhere.
• ?body=... is the optional pre-written message. The text is URL-encoded, which is why the spaces show up as %20 and a comma as %2C. That encoding is what lets punctuation and spaces survive the scan intact. You never type the encoding yourself; the tool applies it when it builds the code.

Because the whole message is stored inside the code, the code does not point at any server and does not expire. It keeps working for as long as the number on it is in service.

Pre-fill the number and the message

The two fields in the tool map straight onto the two parts of the payload.

The phone number is the only part a working code needs. Enter it with the country code so it is unambiguous. On scan, this becomes the recipient of the draft text.

The message is optional but is where most of the value is. A pre-written body means the customer does not have to think of what to say. That is what powers the classic text-to-join and review-request patterns: the body already reads JOIN or I'd like to leave a review, and the customer simply confirms and sends. Leave the field blank and the code still works; it just opens an empty message to your number.

Where SMS QR codes earn their place

• Feedback and reviews. Print a code on the receipt or the table with a body such as I'd like to leave a review. The customer scans while the experience is fresh and is one tap from messaging you.
• Text-to-join campaigns. Contests, loyalty programs and SMS lists usually work by texting a keyword to a number. An SMS code puts that keyword and number into the message for the customer, so the drop-off from mistyped keywords disappears.
• Support and questions. A shelf tag or packaging insert that reads scan to text our team turns a moment of confusion into a conversation instead of a lost sale.

How iPhone and Android handle SMS codes

On an iPhone, the Camera app has read QR codes since iOS 11 in 2017. Point it at an SMS code and a banner offers to open Messages with the number and body filled in. On Android, the camera or Google Lens does the same, opening whichever app is set as the default for text messages. The draft is prepared identically on both; the only difference is which messaging app opens.

One point to be clear about: scanning never sends the text on its own. It only opens the composer with everything prepared. The person always sees the draft and decides whether to send it. That is a feature, not a limitation, because it keeps the customer in control and keeps you on the right side of messaging etiquette.

Design and print tips

• Keep strong contrast. A dark code on a light background reads fastest. Very light dots or a busy background photo behind the code are the usual reasons a scan fails.
• Do not shrink it too far. Around 2 to 3 cm square is the practical minimum on something held at reading distance, such as a receipt or a business card. Give it more room on a poster or a window seen from across a room.
• Print from the SVG. SVG is vector artwork and stays crisp at any size, so it is the right choice for anything going to print. Use the PNG for screens, email footers and social posts.
• Test before you print a batch. Scan your finished code with your own phone and confirm the number and message are exactly what you expect. It takes a few seconds and saves reprinting a run of flyers.
