Free WhatsApp QR Code Generator
Make a QR code that opens a WhatsApp chat with your number and an optional pre-written message, so a customer scans and is one tap from messaging you. Built on a wa.me click-to-chat link, and everything runs in your browser.
How to Use the Free WhatsApp QR Code Generator
This quick video walkthrough shows you how to enter your WhatsApp number, add an optional pre-filled chat message, watch the QR code update live, and download a print-ready PNG or SVG in seconds.
Turn a scan into an open WhatsApp chat
A WhatsApp QR code is the fastest way to let a customer start a conversation with you. They point their phone at the code, WhatsApp opens on a fresh chat with your number, and if you added one, a message is already typed in the box. There is no number to save, no username to search for and no form to fill in. For a store, a service business, a market stall or a product insert, that turns a printed surface into a one-tap line straight to your inbox.
This tool builds that code entirely in your browser. You type a phone number, optionally add a message, and the QR updates live. When it looks right, download it as a PNG for screens or an SVG for print. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account to create, and there is no watermark on the finished code.
What a WhatsApp QR code actually contains
A QR code stores text. What makes this one a WhatsApp code is that the text it stores is a wa.me click-to-chat link, which is WhatsApp's own official link format for starting a chat with a specific number:
https://wa.me/1234567890?text=Hi%2C%20I%20have%20a%20question
https://wa.me/is the click-to-chat host. When a phone opens a link that starts with it, WhatsApp takes over and opens a chat.1234567890is the number, written as digits only. This is the part people most often get wrong, and it has its own rule below.?text=...is the optional pre-filled message, URL-encoded so spaces and punctuation survive. You never type the encoding yourself; the tool applies it.
Because the code stores a plain link, it is a normal QR code that any camera can read. It does not expire and does not depend on any account of yours staying logged in.
The number format rule that makes it work
wa.me only understands the full international number as digits, with nothing else. That means:
- Include the country code. A US number is
1..., a UK number is44..., an Indian number is91..., and so on. - Remove the plus sign, spaces, dashes, brackets and any leading zero. A UK mobile written locally as
07123 456789becomes447123456789: the leading zero is dropped and the44country code is added.
You do not have to strip those characters yourself. Type the number however is natural, and this tool removes the plus sign, spaces and dashes automatically to produce the digits-only form the link needs. Still, it is worth checking the result: the single most common reason a WhatsApp code opens an empty or wrong chat is a missing country code or a leading zero that should have been dropped.
It opens a chat to you, not a login
There is an important distinction to be clear about, because it trips people up. WhatsApp also uses a QR code inside WhatsApp Web, but that one is a login code: it links your own phone to a browser session and it regenerates constantly. This tool does not make that.
What this tool makes is a public click-to-chat code. Anyone can scan it, and scanning it opens a chat addressed to your number so they can message you. You put it on a poster, a website, a business card or a shop window, and it is a doorway into your inbox, not a way to log anyone in. Keep the two ideas separate: one logs your device in, the other invites a customer to message you.
Add an optional pre-written message
The Message field is optional, but it is where a lot of the value sits. When you fill it in, the text is added to the link and lands in the customer's chat box ready to send. That primes the conversation:
- For support, a body such as
Hi, I have a question about my ordermeans the customer opens the chat already knowing what to say. - For sales,
I'd like the current price listroutes the enquiry cleanly. - For bookings,
I'd like to check availabilitygives your team the context up front.
Leave the field blank and the code still works; it just opens an empty chat with your number. As with SMS, nothing is sent automatically. The customer sees the draft and taps send when they are ready, so they stay in control.
Where WhatsApp QR codes earn their place
- Customer support. A shelf tag or packaging insert that reads scan to chat with us turns a question into a message instead of a lost sale.
- Catalogues and price lists. Put a code on a flyer with a pre-filled request, and interested customers pull the latest list straight into a chat.
- Lead capture at events. A booth poster lets a passer-by open a chat with your team without handing over their details on a form.
- Orders and bookings. A code by the till or on a menu starts an enquiry with the context already typed.
In every case the friction of finding your number and composing an opening line is gone, and because WhatsApp threads are persistent, the conversation stays put for follow-up.
Design and print tips
The generator includes the same styling controls as the main QR tool: colours for the dots and corners, dot and corner shapes, quick templates, spacing and an optional centre logo. A few habits keep a code scannable once it is printed:
- Keep strong contrast. A dark code on a light background reads fastest. A busy photo behind the code is the usual reason a scan fails.
- Do not shrink it too far. Around 2 to 3 cm square is the practical minimum on something held at reading distance. Give it more room on a poster or a window.
- Print from the SVG. SVG is vector artwork and stays crisp at any size, so it is the right choice for print. Use the PNG for screens, chat bios and social posts.
- Test before you print a batch. Scan your finished code with your own phone and confirm it opens a chat with the right number and message before committing to a print run.
Frequently asked questions
How does a WhatsApp QR code work?
A WhatsApp QR code encodes a wa.me click-to-chat link, for example https://wa.me/1234567890. When a phone camera reads it, the phone opens WhatsApp on a new chat with that number, ready for the person to type or send. If you added a message, that text is pre-filled in the chat box. It is an ordinary link that WhatsApp recognises, so nothing is sent until the person taps send.
How do I format the phone number?
Use the full international number: the country code followed by the rest of the number, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes, brackets or leading zeros. wa.me only accepts digits, so a UK mobile written locally as 07123 456789 becomes 447123456789. This tool strips the plus sign, spaces and dashes for you, so you can type the number in a natural format and it converts it to the digits-only form wa.me needs.
Is this the same as the WhatsApp Web login QR code?
No, and this is an important difference. The QR code inside WhatsApp Web is a login code that links your own phone to a browser session, and it changes every time. This tool makes a different thing: a public click-to-chat code that anyone can scan to open a chat with your number. You print it, share it or put it on a website, and scanning it starts a conversation with you rather than logging anyone in.
Can I include a pre-written message?
Yes. Fill in the optional Message field and it is added to the link as a URL-encoded text parameter, so it lands in the chat box ready to send. This is useful for support and sales: the customer scans and a message such as Hi, I have a question about my order is already typed, so they only tap send. Leave the field blank and the code just opens an empty chat with your number.
Do I need an internet connection to use it?
Scanning the code and opening WhatsApp needs no separate app beyond WhatsApp itself, but sending a message does need an internet connection because WhatsApp is an internet messaging service, unlike SMS. The person scanning also needs WhatsApp installed and set up on their phone. Creating the code here is fully offline and private, since it runs entirely in your browser.
What can I use a WhatsApp QR code for?
Common uses are customer support (scan to chat with us), sending product catalogues and price lists on request, lead capture at events and on packaging, and order or booking enquiries. Because the code opens a chat with a pre-filled message, it turns a poster, shelf tag, business card or shop window into a one-tap way for a customer to start a WhatsApp conversation with you.
What size should I print a WhatsApp QR code?
Around 2 to 3 cm square is the practical minimum on something held at reading distance, such as a business card or a flyer, and bigger is better on a poster, table tent or shop window seen from further away. Download the SVG for print because it is vector artwork and stays sharp at any size, and use the PNG for screens, chat bios and social posts. Keep a dark code on a light background for reliable scanning.
