How to Make a Packing Slip
This packing slip template needs only a few details. Here is the order to fill it in:
- Add your store details: Enter your business name, logo, and address in the business tab. This is the "from" part of the slip.
- Add the ship-to address: Enter the customer name and shipping address. On a packing slip this is labelled Ship To, because the document travels with the goods.
- Add a slip and order number: Use your order number so the warehouse and the customer can match the parcel to the order.
- List the items: Add one line per product with a short description and the quantity packed. Prices stay hidden on a packing slip, so you only enter what is in the box.
- Download the PDF: Click Download PDF, print it, and place it inside the parcel or in a documents-enclosed pouch on the outside.
What Is a Packing Slip?
A packing slip is a shipping document that lists the products and quantities inside a parcel. It ships with the goods so that whoever opens the box, your customer or their receiving team, can check the delivery against what was ordered. A packing slip does not show prices, tax, or payment details. Its only job is to confirm contents.
Sellers also use the packing slip on their own side. The person packing the order uses it as a pick list to gather the right products, and as a final check before the box is sealed. Including a slip cuts down on "I am missing an item" support tickets, because the customer can see exactly what should be in the parcel.
Packing Slip vs Invoice
People often mix these up, but they do different jobs.
- A packing slip lists what is in the box. It shows no prices and is not a request for money. It goes inside the parcel.
- An invoice is a request for payment. It shows unit prices, tax, discounts, and a total due. It goes to whoever pays the bill.
In most ecommerce orders the customer has already paid at checkout, so they receive a packing slip in the box and, if they want one, a separate paid invoice or receipt by email. Sending priced documents inside a parcel is usually avoided, especially for gifts, which is another reason the packing slip leaves prices off.

What to Include on a Packing Slip
A clear packing slip has a short, predictable set of fields:
- Your store name, logo, and address so the customer knows who sent the parcel.
- The ship-to name and address for the recipient.
- An order or slip number and the date, so the order is easy to trace.
- A line for every item: a product name or short description and the quantity. Many sellers add the SKU so the warehouse can match the physical product fast.
- Optional notes: a thank-you message, return instructions, or a reorder link.
Keep it to one page where you can. A packing slip that fits on a single sheet is faster to read and cheaper to print.
Tips for Better Packing Slips
- Match quantities to the box, not the order. If you ship an order in two parcels, each parcel gets its own packing slip listing only the items in that box. This is how multi-box shipments stay clear.
- Use the SKU column. A short code next to each item makes picking and restocking faster and reduces mis-picks.
- Add a return note. A single line such as "Need to return something? Start at yourstore.com/returns" turns the slip into a small support tool. You can pair it with our return form generator.
- Reuse your branding. A logo and consistent layout make the unboxing feel professional, which matters for repeat purchases.
- Save your store details. The tool remembers your business info in your browser, so the next slip starts mostly filled in.
Packing Slip and Other Fulfillment Documents
A packing slip is one of several documents that move with an order. A purchase order goes the other way, from you to a supplier, when you restock. A delivery note is signed on arrival as proof the goods were delivered. A packing list is a more detailed contents manifest, often used for freight and export shipments. Using consistent, clean documents across all of these makes your store look organised to both customers and suppliers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a packing slip?
A packing slip is a document included inside a shipment that lists the items and quantities in the box. It does not show prices. The receiver uses it to check that the order arrived complete.
What is the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?
A packing slip lists what is in the box and shows no prices. An invoice is a request for payment and shows prices, tax, and totals. The packing slip goes in the parcel; the invoice goes to the person who pays.
Does a packing slip need prices?
No. A packing slip leaves prices off on purpose so warehouse and delivery staff can check contents without seeing what the customer paid. This tool hides prices for the packing slip document type.
How do I make a packing slip for a Shopify order?
Enter your store details, the customer ship-to address, the order or slip number, and one line per product with its quantity. Then download the PDF and include it in the box.
Is this packing slip generator free?
Yes, it is 100% free, needs no signup, and lets you create unlimited packing slips.
