How to Use the Print on Demand Profit Calculator
The calculator has four inputs. Each one maps to a real cost in a print on demand order, so fill them in the way your store actually works.
- Cost of item: your base cost from the print provider. This is what Printful or Printify charges you to print and fulfil one unit, before your margin. For a t-shirt this is often $8 to $13; for a hoodie or an all-over print it is higher.
- Markup %: how much you add on top of the base cost to set your retail price. A 100% markup doubles the base cost. Print on demand usually needs a larger markup than a stocking store because the base cost is already high.
- Customer acquisition cost (CAC): what you spend on ads to get one sale. If you spend $200 on ads and get 8 orders, your CAC is $25 per order. Organic sales from social or a marketplace audience lower this number. Not sure what yours is? Work it out by channel with our free customer acquisition cost calculator.
- Shipping cost: what you pay the provider to ship if you do not fully charge the customer. Enter $0 if the buyer covers shipping in full.
Press calculate to see your selling price, gross profit, gross margin, and net profit after ads and shipping. If your net profit is thin, the base cost and ad cost together are eating the price, and you need a higher markup or a higher-value product.
The Print on Demand Profit Formula
Want to check the numbers by hand? The calculator runs four formulas in order.
First, your retail price comes from the base cost and your markup:
Gross profit is the retail price minus the provider base cost:
Gross margin turns that into a percentage of the retail price:
Net profit is the number that decides whether a design is worth running. It takes your ad spend and shipping out of the gross profit:
For example, a $12 base-cost tee at a 130% markup sells for $28. Subtract the $12 base cost, a $9 customer acquisition cost, and $1 shipping, and your net profit is $6 per order.
Why Print on Demand Margins Need a Bigger Markup
A classic retailer buys 500 shirts at $4 each and sells them at $25. Their margin is enormous because volume crushes the unit cost. A print on demand seller pays $11 for that same shirt because it is printed one at a time. So the same $25 retail price leaves a very different profit.
That single fact drives every print on demand pricing decision. Your base cost is high, so your markup has to be high just to reach a normal margin. Sell that $11 shirt at $22 and your gross margin is only 50%, which sounds fine until ad spend arrives. If it costs $8 in ads to make the sale, your net profit is $3. Price the same shirt at $28 or $30 instead, which the market often accepts for a good design, and the net profit doubles or triples with no change in cost.
The upside of print on demand is that risk is close to zero. You are not sitting on unsold stock, so you can test dozens of designs cheaply and scale only the winners. But that only works if you price with the base cost in full view. A print on demand profit calculator keeps the base cost and the ad cost on screen together, so you never launch a design that cannot make money.
What Is a Good Profit Margin for Print on Demand?
A healthy print on demand store usually aims for a profit margin of 30% to 40% on apparel, and often higher on low-base-cost items like mugs, posters, and stickers where the markup can be aggressive. Because base costs are high, hitting those margins means charging retail prices with confidence, not racing to the bottom.
Product choice matters as much as pricing. A $4 base-cost mug sold at $18 has a far higher margin percentage than a $13 base-cost hoodie sold at $45, even though the hoodie earns more dollars per order. Many successful stores mix the two: low-base items for margin percentage and easy impulse buys, higher-ticket items for dollar profit. Run each product through the calculator so you know which is which before you build a collection around it.
How to Improve Your Print on Demand Profit
- Raise your retail price: good designs command a premium. Test a higher price. Print on demand buyers are paying for the design, not the blank, so a strong graphic supports a price a plain shirt never could.
- Lower your base cost: compare providers and blanks. The same design on a slightly different garment, or with a different print method, can shave dollars off the base cost. At scale, some providers offer branded or bulk pricing that lowers your unit cost.
- Sell higher-value bundles: a matching set, a two-pack, or an upsell spreads a single ad cost across more revenue and lifts your average order value.
- Build organic traffic: short-form video, a niche audience, and marketplaces like Etsy bring sales that do not cost ad spend, which drops your customer acquisition cost and lifts net margin directly.
Print on Demand Profit: A Worked Example
You sell a niche graphic tee. Printful charges you $12 as the base cost. You apply a 130% markup, so your retail price is about $28. Your gross profit is $16, a gross margin of about 57%. Then ad spend arrives at $9 per sale, and you absorb $1 of shipping to offer a rounder price. Your net profit is $16 minus $9 minus $1, which is $6 per order. On 300 orders a month that is $1,800 net, before payment fees.
Now improve two things. You add a matching sticker pack with a $3 base cost sold at $9, and you lift the tee to $30 because the design supports it. The ad cost stays at $9 because it is the same buyer. Net profit per order climbs well above $6. That is the whole print on demand game in one example, and it is exactly what this calculator shows you before you launch a single design.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good profit margin for print on demand?
A healthy print on demand store usually targets a 30% to 40% profit margin on apparel, and often higher on low-base-cost items like mugs, posters, and stickers. Because base costs are high, reaching those margins means charging confident retail prices rather than racing competitors to the bottom. The right target is whatever leaves a net profit you are happy with after your base cost and real ad spend.
How do I calculate print on demand profit?
Start with your retail price, then subtract every cost of the order: the base cost your print provider charges, the ad spend it took to win the sale, any shipping you absorb, and payment processing fees. What is left is your net profit. This calculator does it for you: enter base cost, markup, customer acquisition cost, and shipping, and it returns your selling price, gross margin, and net profit per item.
Why is the base cost so high on print on demand?
Because each item is printed and shipped one at a time, you pay a per-unit price close to what a small order would cost, not the deep discount a bulk buyer gets for ordering hundreds of units. That is the trade-off for holding zero inventory and taking almost no upfront risk. It means your markup has to be larger than a stocking store's just to reach the same margin, which is why pricing with the base cost in full view matters so much.
What costs should I include in a print on demand margin?
Include the provider base cost, shipping you do not pass to the buyer, customer acquisition cost (ad spend divided by orders won), payment processing fees, and any design or app subscriptions. Sample orders and the occasional reprint for a misprint or a return are worth a small buffer. Leaving ad cost out is the most common mistake, because it makes a thin-margin design look profitable.
Is print on demand profitable?
Yes, when you price for the high base cost and keep ad spend under control. The model's strength is near-zero risk: you can test many designs cheaply and scale only the winners, and you never hold unsold stock. The stores that profit charge real retail prices for strong designs, mix low-base items for margin with higher-ticket items for dollar profit, and check every product's numbers before building a collection around it.
How do I use this print on demand profit calculator?
Enter your provider base cost, the markup percentage you want to add, your customer acquisition cost per order (ad spend divided by orders), and any shipping you absorb. The tool calculates your selling price, gross profit, gross margin, and net profit after ads and shipping. If the net profit is thin, raise your markup, choose a lower-base product, or lift your average order value, then recalculate until the numbers work.
