How to Use the Shopify Fee Calculator

This quick walkthrough shows the calculator in action. For Shopify, pick your plan to load the Shopify Payments card rate, add any third-party gateway fee, and get your net payout, or reverse-solve the list price for a target take-home.

The tool has two modes:

1. Price to payout: Enter your sale price, pick your plan, and choose Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway. The calculator lists each fee and your net payout. Add your item cost to see profit and margin too.
2. Net to price: Enter the payout you want to keep, and the calculator solves for the price that leaves you exactly that after fees.

How Shopify Fees Work in the US

Shopify's cost to sell has two separate parts, and it is easy to confuse them:

• Card processing: the fee to run the card, charged whenever a card is used.
• Transaction fee: an extra Shopify fee that applies only if you do not use Shopify Payments.

On Shopify Payments, the transaction fee is 0%. You pay only card processing at your plan's rate:

• Basic: 2.9% + $0.30 online (2.6% + $0.10 in person)
• Grow (formerly Shopify): 2.7% + $0.30 online (2.5% + $0.10 in person)
• Advanced: 2.5% + $0.30 online (2.4% + $0.10 in person)

If you route payments through a third-party gateway instead, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of that gateway's own processing: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. That extra fee is exactly why most stores stay on Shopify Payments.

A Worked Example

Take a $50 online sale on the Basic plan using Shopify Payments:

• Card processing: 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.75
• Transaction fee: 0% ($0.00)
• Net payout: $48.25

Now switch to a third-party gateway on Basic. Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee, which is $1.00 on that $50 sale, on top of whatever the external gateway charges to process the card. The calculator shows both scenarios so the difference is obvious.

Should You Upgrade Your Plan?

Higher plans lower both the processing rate and the third-party transaction fee, but they cost more per month. Upgrading pays off only once your card volume is large enough that the per-sale saving beats the higher subscription. Use this calculator to find the saving on a typical order, multiply by your monthly orders, and compare that total against the difference in plan price. Do the math before you upgrade rather than assuming a bigger plan is always cheaper.

Fees the Calculator Does Not Include

The tool models Shopify Payments card processing and the third-party transaction fee, which are the per-sale costs. It does not add your monthly subscription, app charges, chargeback fees, or currency-conversion costs, since those depend on your store rather than the single sale. Add them separately when you budget, and confirm the live rates on Shopify's pricing page.

Shopify vs Other Platforms

Because Shopify Payments charges 0% transaction fee, selling on your own Shopify store is often cheaper per sale than a marketplace that takes a listing or selling cut and then processing on top. Switch the platform dropdown to compare the same order against Etsy, Stripe, or Square, and the calculator re-computes each breakdown. If you sell on both your store and a marketplace, this shows how much more you keep by driving buyers to your own checkout.
